Entries from April 2008
Being not only with my virtual head in the air, but with the rest of my prim body too making the sculptures which are to be sculpted, I am not always (read never) the first to know the things I should know. One of these things sure is the existence of 3 islands, Welsh Harbour, Welsh Bay and Welsh Cove, owned by Alexandar Vargas. Alexandar Vargas is, apart of being a fine jewelry artist himself, an art collector. Moreover, I think he possesses the largest collection of sculptures in Second Life. An avatar who loves art just needs to go there and explore those three islands, each of them embellished with sculptures of a great variety of second life sculptors, from the higher to the lesser gods (since last Sunday the latter category includes myself!). Take your time, your camera and a friend and fly to Welsh Bay (http://slurl.com/secondlife/Welsh%20Bay/90/204/54) and discover the art while wandering through the landscape.
As a teaser, I took some photos of the highest god’s works…

As of tomorrow (27th of April) content creators will start to create their virtual version of heaven, earth and hell. Rezzable Productions and the NPIRL group, which stands for Not Possible In Real Life – a title which does not need further clarification, found inspiration for the building festival’s theme in the Garden of Earthly Delights, a triptych by the Dutch painter Hieronymus or Jeroen Bosch. Builders are able to use up to 500 prims and the buidling will end the 14th of May. I applied to be a part of this festival and hope they allow me to contribute a piece of the underworld. Awaiting their response, I already started to use my imagination … I must say, I have a hell of a time! More information on this festival can be found here http://garden.rezzable.com/ or by clicking on the Not Possible In Real Life link in my blogroll.

Ladies and gentlemen, here comes Ishtar, ancient Goddess of the moon who is supposed to go and join Gaia in the same sim.

Second Life® does not seem to work for me tonight. Could it be the trademark sign weighing too heavy in cyberspace and causing an extreme amount of cyberlag? Should I change my Macintosh® into an IBM® clone? I presume only the higher gods of the virtual word will know the answer. And I sure hope they are not the inventors or makers of this sign …

From today on, Cheen Pitney, the SL-world famous sculptor, my example and friend, show the statues he made as private commissions, and thus made only for the eyes of the owner, his friends and his visitors. This is a unique chance to admire these masterpieces without having to hire a private detective or force Cheen to let you peek into his inventory. The pictures below are only a wee fraction of what is to be seen in the Crescent Moon Museum ( http://slurl.com/secondlife/FairChang%20Village/218/206/31 ) and I will show you sculptures I had never seen before and – this goes without doubt – I like a lot more than a lot.

In order to free my mind from ancient greeks and kings and before starting a new series of sculptures, I thought it would not be a bad idea to rework my sculpted feet. A brief intermezzo which evolved in one week’s work and feet addiction. There I went again! Well, the extremities are updated and second life avatars who do not like to show their ugly second life feet, are now able to walk around proudly, with their heads up, noses in the wind and prim feet in the sand towards a virtual sunset ..

…that is, when they are smart enough to buy my newly born attachments in my first real rented shop.
Oh yes, I am now the proud renter of this hut in Alegria, http://slurl.com/secondlife/Alegria/209/43/22 and as you can see, waiting in front of my shop door for the first customer to show up. How many people will pass by I ask myself? Come and see next week in my new blog post “Nobody Came”

Today I finished and delivered the last of the six statues I was to sculpt in Second Life for a German sim. Ludwig, King of Bavaria was the last to go and join his companions in a beautiful sim which will open its doors to public next month. I am now off to other and hopefully even more greener fields, but not without showing you this king’s picture and a snapshot of both king and duke, which I took as I peeked through the building’s window.

I praise my luck to be a builder in Second Life! Because hanging around in thin air and not traveling from one island to another sure is the thing to do since the latest upgrade. Each minor attempt to leave my base and go and see something interesting, is instantly punished with a hard crash back into real world. Not that I am complaining, oh no, not me, because I praise windlight which enables me to gaze into the nicely coloured air which seems to be my second life prison for the time being. Do not fear, I am not with my head in the clouds – clouds make me crash too. I wonder, why would anyone willingly stay here if there are no statues waiting to be sculpted?

As fun as prim building in second life might be, I bumped this week into an annoying, and for me long forgotten side effect. After all these months of Maya sculpting and texture baking and importing, I suddenly stood eye in eye with the horrible …. PRIM COUNT. Having no land and no home and thus no real prim problems of my own, I think I hid them in a dark corner of my virtual mind. Sure, I used to count prims before, and yes, I did say a 150 prim limit per statue for the greeks and the germans would be no problem at all. And in fact, for my prim Greeks it was not. But when I was sculpting the German duke who will be in the same sim (not open to public yet and I am not allowed to tell where it will be before the official opening – sorry Corcosman) I found myself struggling with these good old limitations. Well, yes, these statues have to be made as realistic as possible and, well yes, it would be a bit easier when the way they are dressed were a bit more, hm, simple. Our Duke is finished, not with every detail on his fancy dress but with 16 prims above the limit.
